How to Teach Your Dog to Roll Over

Does your dog know any tricks? Fido can learn some truly adorable commands! Teaching your canine buddy to roll over on command is a one classic doggy trick that is still super cute. Read on as a local Diamond Bar, CA vet offers some tips on teaching your four-legged pal this charming trick.

First things first: before teaching your furry friend any cute tricks, make sure he knows basic obedience commands. The five most crucial ones are Sit, Stay, Come, Heel, and Lay Down. These are very important, both for petiquette and for safety reasons. It will also be much easier for you to teach Fido to roll over if he already knows the Lay Down command.

Step 1

Get a yummy treat for your canine pal. Choose something he doesn’t get all the time, such as a piece of deli meat. Have Fido lay down. Sit down with your pup, near his head, and hold the treat near his nose. You’ll want your palm facing up at first. If you want your four-legged friend to roll to the left, hold the treat out to the right. The reverse is also true: if you want your pet to go right, keep his snack on the left.

Step 2

Turn your palm over, and move the treat over your dog’s nose, towards his shoulder blade. The odds of Fido flipping over to follow the snack are pretty good! If he flops over, say ‘Roll Over,’ and then praise your furry buddy and give him his reward.

Step 3

Once your canine companion gets the first part down, you’ll want to add another step. Keep your arm moving, so that Fido flops first one way, and then the other. When your dog rolls over, immediately reward him with treats and praise, and tell him to roll over. With practice, your pooch will soon start responding to the vocal command.

Some dogs will pick things up much more quickly than others will. Never punish your furry pal for not learning fast enough. Just be patient and consistent, and have fun with Fido’s training sessions!
