Choosing the Right Spot for Your Pocket Pet

Have you decided to adopt a bunny, gerbil, hamster, or Guinea pig? These little guys may be small, but they are super cute, and really make great little pets. Pocket pets are usually quite easy to care for. You’ll need to provide your furry buddy with a clean, comfy cage; a suitable diet; and plenty of toys. Choosing the right spot for your pet is also very important. Pocket pets are very small and vulnerable, and must feel safe, secure and comfortable to really be happy. In this article, a local Walnut, CA vet offers advice on where to put a pocket pet’s cage.

Loud noises can be very scary to these cute furballs. Don’t put your four-legged friend in a spot where they will be exposed to loud sounds. For instance, you don’t want to put the cage too near the TV or stereo.

Avoid putting your tiny furball in direct sunlight, or too close to bright lamps or overhead lights. You don’t want your miniature friend getting too hot!

Temperature is another thing to consider. You don’t want to put your furry pal’s cage too close to a heating duct or air vent. Some pets need specific temperature ranges to stay healthy. For instance, hamsters can get very sick if they get too cold. Ask your vet for more information.

Most pocket pets will do best in a spot where they can see, hear, and interact with their human pals, but aren’t in the middle of things. Your tiny friend may not be able to relax if he is surrounded by too much commotion. A family room is often a great spot.

Other Pets

If you have other pets, keep your pint-sized buddy’s cage off the floor, so they can’t reach it. Needless to say, a hamster will not be very comfortable with a kitty staring at him or batting at his cage!

Keep in mind that different types of pets have different needs. For instance, hamsters are nocturnal. Therefore, if you are getting a hamster for your child, you may not want to put Hammie in your young one’s bedroom. Ask your vet for more information.
